The Talmadge Trust for Leadership and Achievement (TMG) is a non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring success in urban communities.

Driven by the belief that every student has the skills to succeed, The Talmadge Trust was founded in 2008 to give urban youth the opportunity to pursue higher education at the rate of their suburban and privately schooled counterparts.

The organization was named after Alexander Z, Talmadge, Sr., who spent a lifetime devoted to leadership as a labor leader in the International Longshoreman’s Association (ILA). Being a trailblazer for causes that crippled the African American community in the 60’s and 70’s, he was significantly involved in social action issues and Philadelphia politics. Most significant was his community based rallying of citizens to dismantle the gang member stronghold plaguing the community and building support from friends and colleagues for the Christian Street YMCA.

As a labor leader in the ILA, he was elected by the union local longshoreman consecutively for 30 years to lead the Local 1291 of the ILA. Mr. Talmadge was elected in 1977 to the national union leadership role of Organizer of the ILA, under the tutelage of John Bowser; President of the ILA. His style and tenacity were much admired by colleagues and opponents alike. br />
His leadership and mentorship has been felt by many in the Philadelphia community who have now achieved their own leadership roles and are continuing the great work of mentoring and giving back.
